Why practise first.

The original that every matrix test is built on.

Harder with every task

The recruitment version gives you 40 minutes for 23 tasks, the adaptive one about 12 minutes for 15. The tasks get harder as you go.

The format can be learned

The tasks are built from a few rules. If you have seen them, you recognise them during the test instead of learning the format while the clock runs.

The same format in the app

Three by three cells, one missing, and the explanation after each answer says which rules applied and what you missed.

Two levels on a test like this can be the difference between moving on in the hiring process and getting the job, or being screened out.

Got the job. After a couple of hours of practice I felt really confident.

The easiest app I tried. Nice not to need a subscription.

I could see which principles I had missed and learn them.

About the test

  • Recruitment (APM-III): 23 tasks in 40 minutes, after four practice tasks, eight options.
  • Adaptive version: 15 tasks in about 12 minutes. A correct answer gives a harder task, a wrong one an easier task.
  • Every task is three by three cells with one piece missing.
  • Raven’s 2 (from 2018): 48 tasks in 45 minutes for adults, drawn from a bank of over 300.
  • The result is a percentile, compared with a norm group.

According to TalentLens (Raven’s Adaptive, APM-III) and Pearson, read on 5 November 2026. Matrix Reasoning Trainer is independent and has no connection to Pearson or TalentLens. Raven’s is a trademark of its owner. The level in the app is the app’s own scale, not a prediction of the result on any other test.

Common questions.

Can you practise for Raven’s matrices?

Yes, the format. The tasks are built from a few rule types, and if you have seen them you do not have to learn the format during the test. Matrix Reasoning Trainer has tasks in the same format, with explanations.

How long does Raven’s take?

It depends on the version. The recruitment version APM-III has 23 tasks in 40 minutes, the adaptive one 15 tasks in about 12 minutes.

Is Matrix Reasoning Trainer connected to Pearson?

No. The app is independent and the tasks are our own.

About matrix tests.

What the format is, how to approach a task, and answers to what people usually ask.

What is a matrix reasoning test?

A matrix reasoning test, often called a logic test, abstract reasoning test or aptitude test, measures the ability to see patterns in figures. Each task is a grid of three by three cells. Eight of them contain figures that follow one or more rules, and the ninth is missing. The task is to find the rules and choose the option that fits the empty cell.

The rules hold in both rows and columns and govern different parts of the figure: shape, number, size, fill, direction, lines at the edge or a dot that moves. The easiest tasks have one rule. The hardest have three or four at once, and the options differ in one detail only.

The format is common in recruitment, as part of the screening before interviews, and it can be practised. Someone who has seen the format before loses no time working out the task and goes in calmer. More is on the pages What is a matrix reasoning test and Logical reasoning tests in recruitment.

A method that helps
  1. Split the cell into parts: shape, number, size, fill, direction, lines, dot.
  2. Find the rule for each part in rows 1 and 2. Check that it holds in the columns.
  3. Build the answer in your head before you look at the options.
  4. Eliminate options that break a rule. Several differ in one detail only.
  5. Use the time. A rushed mistake costs more than a few extra seconds.
How long does it take to prepare for a logic test?

The format settles in after a few days. What matters is having seen every rule type and having done a few tasks against the clock. A few focused sessions give more than weeks of scattered practice.

Can practice improve your result on an aptitude test?

Practice makes a difference on this type of task. Someone who knows the format does not have to learn it during the test, makes fewer careless mistakes and uses the time better. Nobody can promise a result, and the level in the app is the app's own scale.

What is the difference between a matrix test, a logic test and an aptitude test?

The words are used interchangeably. Aptitude test is the broad term for tests that measure thinking. Logic test is the part about patterns and inference. Matrix test is the format: a grid of three by three figures with one cell missing.

Which rules can occur?

The app has eighteen rule types: step by step change, three values distributed, constant, patterns combined, patterns cancelling out, patterns in common, arithmetic on the number, movement along a path, mirroring, rotation of the whole cell, nested figures, number of sides, degree of fill, conditional rule, covariation, slot by slot combination, growing step and turn and change in the cross. The answer tells you which ones applied in each task. Every rule has a page of its own with a solved example.

Is this good preparation for the Alva Labs logic test?

Yes. The Alva Labs logic test is built on matrix tasks of the same kind: three by three figures, one cell missing, rising difficulty. Matrix Reasoning Trainer is independent and has no connection to Alva Labs. More about the format is under Good preparation for the Alva Labs logic test.

What does the app cost?

Five practice tasks are free. The rest is unlocked with a one-time purchase, no subscription. The price is shown in the App Store.
